Recreational Divers

Recreational diving is a growing hobby, attracting numerous new enthusiasts in Finland every year. The Finnish Heritage Agency collaborates with many divers to verify the locations of underwater ancient sites, document them, and exchange information. The goal is to ensure that recreational divers, while engaging in their hobby, respect the ancient remains and the knowledge they hold, and strive to contribute to the preservation of these sites.

To maintain the interest and significance of wreck sites for future generations, it is essential to avoid anchoring on the wrecks, touching them without caution, and taking souvenirs. Objects lifted from the water without proper conservation may not survive for long. Improper actions can damage wrecks, violate the law, and potentially disturb the peace of burial sites.

Exploring underwater ancient remains always requires a permit. The research permit must be applied for in writing from the Finnish Heritage Agency.
